Aqiqah

Sacrifice is performed to express gratitude to Allah for the blessing of having a child.

What is Aqiqah?

Aqiqah involves sacrificing a goat or lamb on behalf of the newborn child. It is expressing our thanks to Allah swt for the gift of a child. Its meat is distributed to the poor or can be used to arrange a feast to which the poor as well as relatives and friends are invited.Aqiqah is a great Sunnah. It is part of the legacy inherited from Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him/pbuh) and a great Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him/pbuh).

Why Aqiqah?

When a child is born, an 'Aqiqah is performed by the parents/guardian to fulfill the following hadith of the Prophet (pbuh), which means, “Every child is in pledge (or "mortgage") for his ‘aqiqah.” Islamic Scholars have presented the following interpretations of the meaning of "pledge", as follows:
as a gesture or expression of thanks to Allah swt,  protection from Shaytaan, expiation of sins and preventing any calamities, inshaAllah.

Another significance of 'aqiqah is that it is part of the Abrahamic legacy. Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) was a man of tawhid (belief in the Oneness of ALlah), and his entire life typified that of a perfect muwahhid or monotheist. He abolished sacrifices or rituals to deities other than ALlah and allowed sacrifices and prayers to be directed solely to Allah. The rituals associated with aqeeqah, therefore, can be considered as a child’s initiation into the lessons of tawhid.

As narrated from Samurah ibn Jundub that the Prophet (pbuh) said, which means, “Every child is in pledge for his ‘aqiqah, which should be sacrificed for him on the seventh day and his head should be shaved and he should be given a name.”(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi; Ibn Maajah; Saheeh Ibn Maajah)

It was narrated from Salmaan ibn ‘Aamir al-Dabbi that the Prophet (pbuh) said, which means, "I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, “ ‘Aqiqah is to be offered for a (newly born) boy, so slaughter (an animal) for him, and remove all dirt from him.”(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5154)

It was also narrated from Umm Karaz that she asked the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) about 'Aqiqah and he said, which means, “For a boy two sheep and for a girl one, and it does not matter whether they are male or female.”
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi; al-Nasaa’i; Abu Dawood; Ibn Maajah; Saheeh Abi Dawood)
